Both International Pier and Puerta Maya are about 3 miles from San Miguel, but it is a safe and scenic walk to the downtown area which I have done a few times. Cozumel is mostly flat with the highest point being just 50 feet above sea level. As you travel out of town you will notice the mangrove forests that dominates the landscape inland while both rocky and sandy beaches surround the exterior. The island is home to the Cozumel Country Club, a popular golfing destination designed by Jack Nicklaus. Beginners, hobbyists and professional players will love the 18-hole course set against a lush wooded area.

The ferry terminal is at walking distance from the Punta Langosta Terminal and a short taxi ride from the other 2 terminals (around $8 each way). Ferries run every hour and the crossing takes around 45 minutes. The terminal in Playa del Carmen is very centrally located and within walking to all main attractions. Shore excursions are offered by all cruise lines, although the available options may vary depending on the ship.

If you are a cigar aficionado, Cozumel has some of the best and most affordable cigars in the Caribbean. There are a number of day-passes to beaches and resorts offering all inclusive packages but also different combos such as day-pass + buffet + transfers + open bar. Upon settling the remaining balance for our day pass, we were escorted to a set of chairs and an umbrella, conveniently located on the beachfront with easy access to the water, restrooms, and a bar. Our drink order was promptly taken, allowing us to settle in and fully enjoy the beauty of the beach.

There’s just something about being hundreds of feet in the air, being pulled by a speed boat. The only thing to keep in mind here is that you may be with a group. Walkable and compact, spend your stop in San Miguel if you need a break from the sun and beaches and instead want a taste of the town. Photographers from our ship were also stationed on the pier to take photos. But looking out from the top decks of the ship, it was hard to resist going outdoors and setting foot in the one Mexican port on our itinerary, at least for a short period of time.
